Yaspal Sharma was born and brought up in a lower-middle-class family in Hisar in the state of Haryana. Since childhood, he was interested in acting and used to actively organize and participate in Ramlila, his brother Ghansham Sharma always supported him for his acting pursuits.

He graduated from the National School of Drama, New Delhi. After his graduation he did theatre for couple of years before he shifted to Mumbai.

His first big break was Govind Nihlani's film, Hazaar Chaurasi Ki Maa , which gave him a chance to act alongside Jaya Bachchan and Nandita Das. However, it was the Oscar Award nominated for the film Lagaan (2001) which brought him to the limelight. He has been a regular in films of legendary director Shyam Benegal and Prakash Jha and continues to work as a stage actor in Mumbai.

He was nominated for Filmfare Best Villian Award for film Gangajal. He won for the short film Moksha in the Independent International Film Festival.

Yaspal have also worked in popular TV serials like Neeli Chhatri wale and Mera Naam Karegi Roshan.

Yaspal Sharma Has also appeared in Web series, short films and now he is working on a biopic on Haryanvi poet Pandit Lakshmi Chand, which is directed, written, acted and coproduced by him.

Yaspal Sharma was always fascinated by the concept of National School of Drama and his future dream project is to make a mini NSD in Haryana State .
